Professional Counselor - License Information

1) Basic requirements necessary to obtain those credentials include completing a Graduate degree in professional counseling or an equivalent degree approved by Professional Counselor Section.

2) Completion of post graduate supervised practice obtained under a professional counselor training license.

Master's level - 3,000 hours of post-degree supervised professional counseling practice including at least 1,000 hours of face-to-face client contact  in not less than 2 years;  doctoral level - 1,000 hours of post degree supervised professional counseling practice.

3) Completion of appropriate application form(s) and payment of fees.

Professional Counselor Application

Individuals who wish to practice professional counseling or who wish to use the title "professional counselor" must be licensed as a professional counselor or hold a temporary license or professional counselor training license, pursuant to s. 457.04(6) and s. 457.13 of the Wisconsin Statues.

An applicant who completes all of the requirements for licensure except for passing the national exam may obtain a temporary license valid for 9 months from the date of its issuance, or the date on which the exams scores are released, whichever occurs sooner.

Professional Counselor Training License

Individuals who wish to practice professional counseling or who wish to use the title "professional counselor" must be licensed as a professional counselor or hold a temporary license or professional counselor training license, pursuant to s. 457.04(6) and s. 457.13 of the Wisconsin Statues.

Basic requirements necessary to obtain this credential include the following:

(1)  In addition to paying the fee under s. 440.05 (6), Stats., an applicant for a professional counselor training license shall submit the completed, signed application form and the materials required under s. MPSW 11.01 (1) (a), (b), (e) and (f). The applicant shall also cause the applicant's employer to confirm in writing directly to the section that the applicant is in a position, or has an offer for a position, in supervised professional counseling practice which meets the requirements of ch. MPSW 12. The application is not complete until the confirmation from the applicant's employer is received by the section.

(2)  A professional counselor training license shall be valid and is required, during a period of supervised pre-licensed practice. The training license shall expire after 48 months. A professional counselor training license may be renewed by the discretion of the professional counselor section.  

4) Successful completion of required examinations.

5) Substance Abuse Specialty Authorization.
