| How do I
prepare for the credential or
certification exam? |
| |
The examinations are
based upon primary proficiencies that the department believes are
essential to demonstrate a reasonable level of both regulatory and
acceptable trade practice knowledge to perform the responsibilities of
the respective contractor or technician specialty. Most people will
develop the competency through both work experience and knowledge of
written industry standards. The Department has developed a list of the
principle standard documents from which the exam questions
are drawn from. |
| What are my
alternatives to maintain my certification if I do not obtain the 12
Continuing Education credits prior to the designated date? |
| |
The Commerce approved
course(s) providing the twelve continuing education credits must be
completed during the 24 month period that ends 90 days prior to the
credential renewal date. Individuals who fail to obtain the required
number of credits may submit a
Petition For Variance
to the department along with the petition fee of $200. The petitioner
must state why the credits were not obtained during the allowable time
period and the alternative he/she is seeking by Petition For Variance.
The petitioner has two alternatives: |
| |
1. Obtain the necessary
credits within the remaining days prior to
credential renewal.
The petitioner must identify the course and date of completion in the
petition application. |
| |
2. Successfully complete
a written examination conducted by the
department.
The petitioner must register and submit the appropriate fee for
examination. The department will not consider the petition application
as a registration for an examination. |
| |
NOTE
: The
Petition For Variance form does not have to be endorsed by the
municipal fire or building inspection department. |
| |
| Comm 5.07
(2)(b) states that a person may apply to renew his/her credential
within 6 months after expiration of the credential. Will Continuing
Education acquired during this period apply to the subject renewal?
|
| |
No. The extended
application period applies only if all the other elements of credential
renewal are in order, e.g., renewal fee, registration application and
continuing education. An individual is not authorized to conduct the
activities of a credentialed individual within this period. However,
continuing education credits acquired during this period would apply to
the next credential renewal. |
| |
|
| Commerce
approves Continuing Education courses, but does not send out a list of
available classes. How can I find out what continuing education courses
are available and the dates? |
| |
The bureau posts a list
of related CE
course providers
on the Internet. Individuals seeking CE opportunities must contact the
providers directly. The bureau does not have the resources to
continually monitor and publish course offerings. |
| |
|
| Why does
Commerce approve one vendor's course for a specific number of credits
or credential categories and not the same for another vendor that has
applied for CE credits? |
| |
The department attempts
to maintain continuity in CE course evaluation and approval. The review
is often judgmental; while the courses names may be similar the
accompanying descriptions and syllabus may be different resulting in a
different approval. |
| |
|
| If I have
three certification credentials, do I
need to obtain 12 Continuing Education credits for each credential?
|
| |
Yes. |
| |
| Will the
Continuing Education credits from one class apply to more than one
certification credential maintained by an individual? |
| |
Yes, provided the CE
provider has submitted for the respective credential CE application and
the certified individual who has attended the CE course indicates the
respective credentials as he/she completes the course attendance
verification. As an example, a course has been approved for 8 credits
for Site Assessor and 6 credits for Remover. An individual, who
maintains both credentials, attending the course will receive 8 credits
toward the required 12 credits for Site Assessor and 6 credits toward
the required 12 credits for Remover.
Bureau credential staff will not be responsible for comparing and
matching CE course approvals and credits with individual credentials. |
