Commercial Buildings Code electronic versions are online

by J.B. Smith, former Safety and Buildings Division Commercial Buildings Program Manager

As Wisconsin moves forward in the use of model codes and, more importantly, in my opinion, strives to stay up to date with those we adopt, it is not uncommon for me to get calls asking about the electronic availability of codes that are in effect.  Many people have asked me about internet availability of codes.

I think it might be useful to explain some of the electronic code resources that are available.

First, note that Wisconsin's administrative rules are available online with no fee.  Those Wisconsin codes that adopt and modify a specific edition of model codes.  For Wisconsin codes, you can use this  link to take you to the S&B WebSite to view the administrative rules that division staff administer.

The Commercial Buildings Program of the Safety and Buildings Division primarily focuses on the model codes created by the International Code Council (ICC).  Wisconsin has adopted and modified the International Building Code, International energy Conservation Code, International Mechanical Code, International Fuel Gas Code, and International Existing Building Code as part of the Wisconsin Commercial Building Code, SPS 360-366.  Wisconsin also uses by reference many portions of the International Fire Code  within the WCBC.

The ICC Web site has a number of electronic code services, some by subscription and some free, http://www.ecodes.biz/

The WCBC also uses the Wisconsin Fire Prevention Code, SPS 314 for the post-construction maintenance and use of commercial buildings.  The Wisconsin Fire Prevention Code adopts and modifies the Uniform Fire Code (National Fire Prevention Association 1).  Also, the I-Codes used in the WCBC reference countless NFPA codes and standards.  The Wisconsin Electrical Code, SPS 316, references another NFPA code, the National Electrical Code.

Here is a link to take you to the NFPA Web site, specifically where they feature their electronic document services - NFPA Codes Online, http://www.nfpa.org/codesonline/
