Continuing education classes which the Safety and Buildings Division puts on annually to assist people who have con ed responsibilities for their credential renewal will begin in December and will feature "Code Update" topics that drew praise after presentation before a recent state inspectors gathering.
The "Code Update" topics focus on a code change package that has been developed over several years by S&B staff and the Plumbing Advisory Council, a package which is expected to go to public hearings this year. (Watch the WPCR and the S&B WebSite for hearing info.) Some of the code change ideas were discussed in an August, 2001 WPCR article, page 6, copies of the WPCR are on the WebSite under "Publications," "Publications Archives." Dates and locations

For the first time, as a fledgling effort to provide new Internet services, the registration form and information are also on the S&B WebSite, although that WebSite process is not as automated as it will be in the future. The registration info is available from the top of the S&B Home Page, http://www. commerce.state.wi.us/SB/SB-HomePage.html. Because people who register for the S&B classes do not receive registration confirmations, S&B will this year post on the WebSite lists of people who are registered. The lists will go into place in November. Look to that same Home Page address in the future for the registration lists. People can also check their continuing education status via the S&B WebSite; choose "Credentials" from the links on the left of the Home Page, then choose your cre-dential category for a list with con ed status.   2. A Safety and Buildings plumbing staff meeting discussion recently dealt with floor sinks and funnels in terms of the indirect connection requirements to these fixtures. Does the code define as an air-gap the termination of a drain pipe discharging below the rim of a funnel that extends from a floor sink? Isn't the funnel connection an improvement on an air-gap that would terminate above an open portion of the floor sink? Comm 82.33(8)(c)] allows the discharge of indirect wastes into an ungrated portion of a floor sink. Manufacturers have designed ungrated portions of floor sinks to include a funnel connection. It is code compliant to terminate above that open portion, however, the required distance for the air-gap would be measured from the rim of the funnel, not the rim of the floor sink. This requirement is found in Comm 81.01(6) in the definition of an air-gap for a drain system as "the unobstructed vertical distance through the free atmosphere between the outlet of indirect or local waste piping and the flood level rim of the receptor into which it discharges." Sometimes, a picture is worth a thousand words, so . . . Image alt text
