Renewal Information

Requirements

  • FEE (See Renewal Dates and Fees)
  • SIG (Signatures of all officers/members regarding conviction history.  Report using the paper renewal form, or Form 062RA if renewing online.)
  • INS (See detailed information below.*)

Notice:  If renewing online, you will also need to print, sign, and return Form 062RA.

*INS:  Liability Insurance or Bond Information

Private Detective/Security Agencies are required by Wis. Stat. § 440.26(4) to obtain a liability policy or bond in the amount of $100,000 that must be maintained and reported annually as noted below.  If your agency requires its employees to have firearms, the agency may not use a bond and the liability insurance must cover firearms.  The comprehensive general liability policy must also include coverage for bodily injury liability, property damage and personal injury.  If your agency is covered by a bond instead of liability insurance, each Private Detective your agency employs will be required to obtain a $2,000 bond in addition to the agency bond.

Liability insurance policies expire on their anniversary date.  The comprehensive general liability policy must include coverage for bodily injury liability, property damage and personal injury.  If an agency permits anyone associated with it to carry a firearm in the course of duty, as a private security person, it must also have coverage for injury or damage resulting from the use of firearms.

Certificate of Liability Insurance and Form #1482 Information for Agencies

Your insurance provider needs to complete a Certificate of Liability Insurance and Form 1482.

Statement Concerning Liability Insurance for Private Detective Agencies

If your coverage isn't through an authorized insurer, a cut-through endorsement will be required.  Your insurer needs to verify that your coverage is afforded through an authorized provider by checking the website of the Office of the Commissioner of Insurance, before submitting to DSPS, to make sure a cut-through endorsement is included if needed.

Both the Certificate of Liability Insurance and Form #1482 should be submitted together every year (as well as the cut-through endorsement, if applicable), prior to the insurance expiration date.  Please mark your calendar as a reminder if necessary.  Please DO NOT send any of these forms to DSPS separately, as they will NOT be accepted.

The "Name of Insured" must be the name under which you applied to the Department to license your agency.

The "Name and Address of the Certificate Holder" should be as follows:
Department of Safety and Professional Services (DSPS)
PO Box 8935
Madison, WI  53708-8935

Bond and Form 1483 for Agencies

If you obtain a $100,000 bond, INSTEAD of liability coverage, your insurer needs to complete Form #1483 and submit all paperwork together.
