Funeral Director Continuing Education

​​Every funeral director shall complete at least 15 hours of approved continuing education during each biennial renewal period.

At least 3 hours must be in each of the following subject areas:

  1. Grief counseling or communication;
  2. Professional conduct, business ethics or legal aspects specifically related to practice in the profession;
  3. Business management concepts relating specifically to delivery of services to a consumer;
  4. Technical or practical aspects of the profession.

No more than 7 hours may be acquired through in-service continuing education programs sponsored by a funeral establishment.

No more than 2 hours may be acquired for presentation of any continuing education program by a funeral director.

No more than 10 hours may be acquired through participation in non-contact home study programs.

Continuing education courses sponsored by national, international or state funeral director's associations, educational institutions accredited by the American Board of Funeral Service Education, or approved by the APFSP are acceptable.  These courses are recognized under Wisconsin Administrative Code Ch FD 4.04 (8) and as long as they meet the requirements of FD 4.04 (1) and FD 4.045, they do not require separate pre-approval by the Department on behalf of the Funeral Directors Examining Board to be acceptable continuing education for WI licensees.  All other courses must be submitted by the course provider for approval.

NOTE:  For the renewal of a license that expires on the first renewal date after the date on which the examining board initially granted the license, completion of 4 credit hours of continuing education subsequent to the date the applicant was granted the initial license is required. The required 4 credit hours of continuing education may include instruction in any of the following topics that the board has determined may prepare a new licensee for practice as a funeral director: ​(a) Embalming. (b) Life insurance. (c) Hospitality. (d) Celebrant training. (e) Crematory operation. (f) Public speaking. (g) Small business management. (h) Marketing, including the use of graphic design and social media.
