30 hours of Category 1 AMA or AOA is required.
See Administrative Code for more details.
For the 2025 renewal, each license holder will be required to take two of the required 30 hours related to prescribing opioids and other controlled substances. These courses must be AMA or AOA Category 1, but no longer require specific approval from the Medical Examining Board. Physicians who do not hold a U.S. Drug Enforcement Administration number to prescribe controlled substances are exempted under the rules.
This is separate from the 8 hour requirement from the DEA. License holders should contact the DEA regarding those hours. Courses taken for the DEA requirement can be used for Wisconsin renewal as long as they meet the requirements in Med 13 of the Wisconsin Administrative Code.
The Medical Examining Board Partners with CE Broker
