Licensure Updates: Notifications

• Board of Nursing promulgated Emergency Rules (effective October 13, 2018): 

  Wisconsin Administrative Code Chapter N8 Relating to Advance Practice Nurse Prescribers Collaboration with Dentists

• The Board of Nursing recently updated Wisconsin Administrative Code Chapter N1, which will be effective on September 1, 2018. The new rule updated the requirements for the approval process for schools of nursing. The updates addressed curriculum and clinical experiences including simulations.

• Board of Nursing promulgated Emergency Rules (effective May 4, 2018): 

  N2 and N9 Relating to the Nurse Licensure Compact

• Wisconsin Chapter N8 Certification of Advanced Practice Nurse Prescribers Nursing Administrative Code chapter was updated effective October 1, 2016.

• Nursing Administrative Code Chapters updates effective September 1, 2016: 

  N5 Renewal was repealed and recreated as Subchapter V in N2

  N6 Standards of Practice for Registered Nurses and Licensed Practical Nurses

On September 1, 2026, the Wisconsin Board of Nursing and DSPS will begin issuing Advanced Practice Registered Nurse (APRN) licenses. All existing Advanced Practice Nurse Prescriber (APNP) licenses will be converted to APRN licenses on this date, as well.

The new APRN license will require one of four designated “Recognized Roles". They are: Nurse Practitioner, Certified Registered Nurse Anesthetist, Clinical Nurse Specialist, and Certified Nurse Midwife.

We sent an email to APNP license holders noting the current recognized role attached to their credential. If your recognized role information is missing or incorrect, check the email for instructions on how to submit Recognized Role documentation. Adding or correcting Recognized Role information as soon as possible helps avoid confusion or corrections when licenses convert on September 1, 2026.
