Extended Description of Diagram

On the first floor diagram is a common space that is depicted as taking up about all of the left half of the diagram. The common space has a square that says 1, a symbol for Carbon Monoxide Alarm, and the symbol for Combustion Appliance. The common space has a door that opens to apartment 1 to the right, stairs that lead up to the second floor, and a utility room at the bottom of the left side of the diagram. The utility room has a symbol for Carbon Monoxide Alarm, symbol for Combustion Appliance, and the number 3 in a square. The right side of the diagram labeled apartment 1 is split into two rooms – the top third is a bedroom and the bottom two thirds is a living space. The living space has the number 4 in a square.

On the second floor diagram it is split into 2 apartments – the apartment on the left is labeled apartment 2 and there is a large living space with a bedroom towards the back of the apartment. In the middle of the living space is the symbol for Carbon Monoxide Alarm. In the left most bottom of the living space is the Combustion Appliance Symbol. There is a square labeled 2. Between apartment 2 and 3 are stairs and a small foyer that connects the two apartments. Apartment 3 is indicated as being on the right side of the second floor diagram. There are two bedrooms one on the top of the right side of the diagram and then another on the bottom of the diagram with a living space in the middle. Notes

  1. Fuel Burning Appliance Outside of the Unit - For example a gas fireplace

    • A carbon monoxide detector is not required in the unit when a carbon monoxide detector is provided on the ceiling between the fuel burning appliance and the unit.

  2. Fuel Burning Appliance - For example a gas stove

    • A carbon monoxide detector shall be provided in the unit that contains a fuel burning appliance and shall be located in the immediate vicinity of the sleeping room.

  3. Forced Air Furnace

    • A carbon monoxide detector is not required in a unit if a carbon monoxide detector is provided in the first room or area served by each main duct leaving the furnace and one of the following is satisfied:

      1. The carbon monoxide alarm signals are automatically transmitted to all units served by the furnace and to a designated location at a facility staffed by trained personnel on a continuous basis where alarm and supervisory signals are monitored, and facilities are provided for the notification of the fire department.

      2. In addition to the first room or area served by each main duct leaving the furnace a carbon monoxide detector is installed in every 4th unit on the same floor as that first room or area.

  4. Apartments Numbers 1 and 3 do not require carbon monoxide detectors because they do not have any combustion appliances.
