Inoperable Equipment
As a licensed elevator mechanic, I have for years been leaving conveyances inoperable if there is any problem at all with a safety issue. Recently, I have had a lot more requests to leave units running. My question is, should the mechanic simply advise the customer of these issues and tell them not to use it, or should they disable the units every time that there is any issue?
Yes, ASME A17.1 8.6.1.2.2 requires "Where a defective part directly affecting the safety of the operation is identified, the equipment shall be taken out of service until the defective part has been adjusted, repaired, or replaced." DSPS also recommends that it be notified prior to placing the conveyance out of service.
